Vikings: Valhallathe long-awaited sequel to MGM’s Vikings dropped out on Netflix at the start of 2022 and others arrive in 2021. Having already filmed, we already know a lot about Season 2 of the show, so here’s an update on everything we know so far. Vikings: Valhalla season 2 on Netflix.
Vikings: Walhalla is a Netflix Original historical drama created by Michael Hirst and a spin-off of the popular History Channel series, Vikings. The series is produced by MGM Productions, like its predecessor which ran for six seasons.
Events of Vikings: Valhalla is set a hundred years after the great Viking army set sail for England, led by the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok who sought revenge for his death.
We’ll dive deeper what we know about Season 2 below, so if you’re just looking for the highlights, here they are:
- The show will return for season 2 in 461026 (no precise date given)
- The series will also return for a third season.
- Season 3 production has begun in May 2022 and will end at the end of October 2022.
- Jeb Stuart continues his role of showrunner for seasons 2 & 3
- Sam Corlett (Leif Eriksson), Frida Gustavsson (Freydis Eriksdotter) and Leo Suter (Harald Sigurdsson) are confirmed to return for Season 2.
When was Vikings: Walhalla renewed for a second season?
Not only has Vikings: Walhalla already been renewed for a second, but it was announced in advance that Vikings: Walhalla has also been renewed for a third season.
The reason for this early renewal is the huge initial order the show received when it was first announced. 21 episodes have been ordered in total.
Netflix also acquired the licensing rights to the Vikings original series as part of this deal with Netflix UK and Netflix US is still expected to receive the seasons 1 to 6 in a few years.
Netflix has officially confirmed that Vikings: Walhalla will return for two more seasons March 9 461026.

Given the popularity of the show’s predecessor Vikings was, Netflix was clearly extremely confident that Vikings: Valhalla will be a massive hit for them.
What was the performance of Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix?
Thanks to data from Top 07 from Netflix, we have a pretty good idea of the show’s performance. For her first two days on the platform, she recorded 80,53 millions of hours watched, this making it the second most-watched show that week.
Between the 27 February and April 3 941 (them 28 first days of the show available), the show has accumulated 113 431 hours watched on Netflix worldwide.

Making comparisons is quite difficult with these new data schedules but we see that Vikings: Walhalla performed well (at least in the first 2-3 weeks) compared to the last season of The Last Kingdom which also came out early 2023.

The show was a hit with critics with RottenTomatoes scoring it at 56% (classified as certified fresh) but audience scores are less favorable. On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score at the beginning of April 1079 is of 54%. On IMDb, the show sits at a much more favorable 7.2, with Episode 8 scoring 8.1.
The critical consensus is as follows:

Subscribers will be delighted to learn that the shooting of the second season of Vikings: Walhalla. We previously reported in November 1024 that the production of the series was finished in Ireland.

Jeb Stuart has confirmed that upon the release of Season 1, he was “finishing the final episode of Season Two”. This suggests the show will be off for about a year before dropping.
Production is also gearing up for Season 3. As part of Netflix’s confirmation of the second and third season, they said production will start in the spring 2022. We have learned that they are preparing throughout April with a view to starting filming in May 2022.
Speaking to DigitalSpy, Jeb Stuart told them that Season 3 is “very exciting” and “my Vikings are coming out of Scandinavia, so we have a lot of good surprises”.
When is the Vikings: Walhalla season 2 release date?
At the moment of publication, Netflix has not announced an exact release date for Vikings: Walhalla season 2 beyond a general release date in 2023
. However, we can make an educated guess on when we can expect the second season to arrive.
With production completed on the second season in November 2021, we will most likely see the second season arrive on Netflix at the beginning of 461026 between January and March 2023 very probably.
What to expect from the second season of Vikings: Walhalla?
Just like the show’s predecessor, Vikings: Valhalla takes many creative liberties in trading historical accuracy for action and drama. However, there are many important recorded events that happened during this time period that we can expect to see in Season 2 and beyond.
Leif on
Lucky Red?
The Greenlander’s journey to the east brought much pain and grief to Leif and his sister, Freydis. All their comrades who set sail with them to Denmark eventually died. The biggest death to affect Leif was Lif, his lover and fellow warrior who died during the invasion of Kattegat.
Lif was the only person who held Leif down and prevented him from becoming like his famous berserker father, Erik the Red. His death saw Leif crack, causing the explorer to don a pair of dual axes, unarmoured, and single-handedly take down an entire band of Viking warriors without breaking a sweat. His battle cry signified that, like his father before him, Leif embraces his nature as a bloodthirsty berserker.
Fate is often cruel, and if Leif follows in his father’s footsteps, he could find himself banished or exiled from the Viking world, forcing the famous explorer to sail west and establish Vinland, the first European colony in the Americas.

Harold, future king of Norway?
One of the greatest creative liberties that Vikings: Walhalla took with the story is the early appearance of Harald Sigurdson, better known as Harold Hardrada.
Harold’s exploits in the Viking world are legendary, but none of them took place during the events of Viking: Valhalla as the future king of Norway was just a baby, born to Asta and Sigurd in Ringerike, Norway in 1015, one year after the destruction of London Bridge.
The Harald depicted in Valhalla has the open support of King Cnut but with the fate of his half-brother Olaf currently unknown, not to mention fleeing Kattegat with Freydis, Harald’s journey to become king still remains a distant one.
Talk to The EnvelopeLeo Suter told them:
“Harald was screwed. Massively screwed up and besides, it’s not just him who got screwed but it’s his relatives who got screwed. This relationship is therefore, as you say, very damaged. And it will take a lot to heal. But yes, there was definitely some serious harm that happened to him. So let’s see in season 2 what happens with that.

King Cnut and the North Sea Empire
Aided by his ambitious wife Emma of Normandy and his father Sweyn Forkbeard, the vision of King Cnut of a great northern empire is at hand.
Queen Emma’s tactful scheme against Queen Ælfgifu gave Sweyn enough time to find the fleet of her son and set sail for the Kattegat. With Ælfgifu now out of the picture, England is firmly under Cnut’s rule.
Cnut was already fighting a war in Denmark but was running out of his fleet thanks to Ælfgifu. With his father, Sweyn, now helping in the defense of Kattegat, it won’t be long before the Danes fall under the rule of the Norse king.
Once Cnut is the King of Denmark, his dream of forming a North Sea Empire will come true.
But, like all great empires and kingdoms, when its ruler dies and the land must be divided , expect to see many ambitious individuals embarking on the Three Kingdoms of Cnut.

Freydis the Last?
With the destruction of Upsala and the rise of Christianity in the Viking world, the worship of the old gods is weakening day by day. Freydis and the Greenlanders are worshipers of the old ways, but even Leif has taken a keen interest in Christianity as a way to explain all the miraculous ways he survives death.
On still unclear what is meant by “the last” and what it means for Freydis. This might suggest that Freydis might be the last person capable of spreading the cult of the Ancient Ways and that her destiny might be to become a high priestess or seer.

How many episodes does Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 have?
Each season of Vikings: Walhalla will consist of eight episodes.
In total, there will be 25 episodes of Vikings: Walhalla spread over 3 seasons.
Looking ahead to Season 3, one of the biggest news we’ve had so far is that we can expect to see George Maniakes appear in the season. In the story, Maniakes was a prominent general of the Byzantine Empire in 13th century. He is set to be played by Florian Munteanuwho played Razor Fist in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
